Other Vision Assessment
General Contact lens Assessment
Contact lens products differ from other consumer goods. Improper care can result in severe sight-threatening consequences. Therefore, Contact lens fitting requires meticulous procedures which are more than prescribing glasses. At the same time, purchasing contact lenses without optometrists’ assessments are strongly discouraged.
A proper contact lens consultation begins by asking your visual requirements and lifestyle followed by careful refraction. Then, detailed examination on the corneal health and corneal dimension measurements will be conducted. After collecting these vital information, corresponding trial contact lenses will be put onto your eyes to evaluate the comfort, contact lens centration and movement as well as the visual outcome. The contact lens which has the best overall performance will be prescribed.
Regular review and aftercare are vitally important for wearing contact lenses. This is to ensure the lenses are still suitable to wear and the wearing habit still meets the standard.
Multifocal Contact Lens Assessment
After 40 years old, people will start having different degrees of reading difficulties due to normal aging. Existing contact lens wearers may need reading glasses or even being bothered and give up wearing contact lenses. To tackle reading problem on contact lens wearers, newly designed multifocal contact lenses provide the latest solution to cater the visual needs.
Generally speaking, most of the multifocal contact lenses consist of distant and near vision zones which are distributed in a concentric ring manner. The distant and near vision will be controlled by pupil size which will change accordingly at different viewing distances. Unlike progressive glasses, multifocal contact lenses do not require posture compromisation. At the same time, binocular vision can be retained because both eyes now work together at every distance.
Compared to a general contact lens consultation, fitting multifocal contact lenses requires few additional steps. Before examination, vision expectations will be discussed to avoid discouragement due to unrealistic visual demand. Also, multifocal contact lens prescription will be adjusted according to your eye dominance and visual needs. Therefore, it is common to have multifocal contact lens prescription different from your old contact lens or glasses prescription.
Marine License and Driving Vision Test
According to the Marine Department, pleasure vessel operators and coxswains have to meet the required eyesight standards in order to apply or renew their certificates. Registered Part I and Part II optometrist are qualified to conduct these eyesight tests. Generally the tests cover visual acuity at far, intermediate and near, colour vision assessment and visual field assessment.
Your driving license may restrict that you require optical corrections for driving. If you need to renew your driving license but you have undergone treatments to change your refractive states (Such as LASIK), you can delete this restriction by asking your optometrist to issue relevant certificate. Besides, driving requires sufficient visual function to ensure safety. Optometrists can perform related eye examination to assess the driving-related vision including monocular and binocular visual acuity, visual field assessment and colour vision assessment.
